【FOCUS】Waste Management: For a Better Future

As Shanghai started their new “Garbage sorting” recycling rules, the proper way to deal with domestic waste has become a buzz topic all over the country. By the year 2020, this garbage sorting action, which is the 11th Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations, has also been carried out in Guangzhou, which has been widely supported by citizens. Surabaya, Indonesia
Public Participatory in 3R Waste Management for Better Surabaya


With increasing amount of waste going to the landfill, waste issue attracted wider interest and was taken more seriously. Discussions were carried out on how waste management should be carried out, how to implement bigger-scale and innovative waste management, how to involve as many people as possible through community approaches, etc. In later date, Surabaya needs to do more in waste management with 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) approach. (Read more)

Incremental, Participatory, Programmatic Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme

The programme has at its core the delivery of infrastructure to informal settlements. This comprises communal ablutions facilities (toilets, showers, sinks and wash-troughs for laundry); individual electrification; improved footpaths, access roads and storm-water controls; refuse collection; and improved facilities for Early Childhood Development Centres. Residents’ right to stay on the occupied site is recognized, resulting in safety from eviction and the right to benefit in the incremental upgrading process. (Read more)

Integrated Community Based Solid Waste Management

This application focuses on an initiative aiming at improving the collection of waste in the city of Khosoos. It assisted the formalization of informal waste collectors through one NGO and three private sector companies, and supported ten of the poorest collectors with motorized tricycles for waste collection. Model of the Best Regional Circular Economy Concept for Cities, Companies and Citizens

The concept has reduced the costs of waste management to the lowest levels in Finland and recent choices led to the price reduction of a further 20 percent. Today, the recovery state is almost 90 percent; with the digestion plant completion in 2018 the recovery of the nutrients and biomaterials will be almost 100 percent. (Read more)

AI-powered waste management underway in China

Xiaohuanggou (which means little yellow dog in English), a company principally engaged in environmental protection, has rolled out more than 10,000 AI-powered waste sorting bins in 33 Chinese cities, having over 2.6 million users on its app in less than a year under the support of government policy. The AI-powered garbage sorting bin could automatically identify waste using cameras or the average density and size of the items. It also pays users when they recycle metals, plastic and paper boxes.
