In its 2014-2019 Strategic Plan, Lake Zurich identified Civic Engagement as a high priority. In order to address this goal, two objectives were established to advance this priority, specifically “Create an Infrastructure of Civic Engagement” and “Nurture a Culture of Radical Transparency”. Several processes were discussed and developed to achieve this goal, including stepping up the Village’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Next Door. In addition, a “Briefing Room” section was inserting onto the main section of the Village’s website wherein updates are constantly being added on any newsworthy event or development which might be of interest to residents and businesses. The Village also began utilizing Survey Monkey to obtain public opinion on any topic of major interest, most notably development/redevelopment projects. The results of these surveys are published on the Lake Zurich website for anyone to read. Most recently, a separate, stand-alone e-newsletter is published every weekend to bring the reader up to date on the current status of the numerous vacant or abandoned properties in the Village. The title of this weekly update is titled, appropriately, “What’s Happening With…?” The Village was recently awarded the “Sunshine Award” by the Illinois Policy Institute for establishing a Transparency Portal on its website which allows the reader to access nearly all available information on the Village such as employee salaries, audits, expenditures, contracts, etc. The Institute gave Lake Zurich a transparency score of 96.8%, placing in sixth in over 6,000 units of local government in Illinois.
